What Can Someone Find Out From Your Number Plate?

A UK registration plate unlocks useful public vehicle data — but keeper identity stays protected. Here is exactly what anyone can see, what requires authorisation, and what is genuinely private.

Quick answer

Public vs Private Vehicle Data

Anyone can look up a UK number plate and find: make, model, colour, engine size, fuel type, year, MOT status, tax status and CO2 emissions. What they cannot access: the registered keeper's name or address. This data is held by DVLA but not released to members of the public — only to authorised parties with a legal basis.

Questions & answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Can someone find my address from my number plate?
No — not legitimately. DVLA holds the registered keeper's name and address, but this information is not publicly available. DVLA only releases keeper details to parties with a legally recognised purpose (such as parking enforcement companies, police, and insurance investigators). A member of the public entering a registration online cannot access keeper identity.
What vehicle information is public from a number plate?
The publicly accessible data includes: make, model, colour, engine size, fuel type, year of manufacture, date of first UK registration, MOT status and expiry date, tax (VED) status and due date, CO2 emissions, and whether the vehicle is on SORN. This data can be accessed by anyone using the DVLA's free vehicle enquiry service or tools like MotR.
Can insurance companies find out who owns a car from the number plate?
Yes. Insurance companies, law enforcement, and other regulated bodies can request keeper data from DVLA through official channels. Private individuals cannot. Parking enforcement companies (approved creditors) can also apply for keeper data through DVLA when issuing penalty charge notices.
Is it illegal to look up someone's number plate?
Looking up publicly available vehicle data from a number plate — such as MOT status or make and model — is not illegal. Accessing or attempting to access keeper identity without a lawful purpose is illegal under data protection law.
Can someone track my car using my number plate?
Police and authorised bodies use ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) technology to log vehicle movements. Private individuals have no legal means of tracking a vehicle by number plate. If you have serious concerns about harassment or tracking, contact your local police.
Does a private number plate hide vehicle information?
No. A private or personalised number plate is simply a different identifier for the same vehicle. The DVLA still holds the full vehicle record linked to that plate, and the same public data is accessible. The plate format changes, but the data transparency does not.
