A private plate on a used car means the vehicle's MOT history may be split — earlier tests recorded under the original registration, later tests under the private plate. Always ask for the car's original registration number and run MOT history under both. A paid HPI check traces all previous registrations via the VIN. What is a private number plate?
A private (personalised) number plate is a vehicle registration mark that has been purchased from DVLA or another source and assigned to a vehicle by the registered keeper. Unlike a standard age-identifier plate, a private plate does not reveal the vehicle's age or registration area. They are traded as assets and can have significant monetary value.
How do I find the original registration of a car with a private plate?
The V5C logbook should show the previous registration history if a private plate has been transferred on or off. A paid HPI or Experian check traces all previous registrations associated with the vehicle's VIN. This is important because if a private plate has been applied to a vehicle, the pre-plate history (including older MOT tests) may have been recorded under a different number.
Can a private plate hide a car's MOT history?
Partially. The DVSA MOT history is linked to the registration number in use at the time of each test. If a car had a private plate applied mid-life, earlier MOT tests may appear under the original registration. A paid HPI check traces all registrations, allowing you to search under each one. This is why checking VIN as well as registration is important when buying a car with a private plate.
How do I transfer a private plate to a new car?
You can transfer a personalised registration online via gov.uk using the 'Assign a personalised registration' service. You'll need the V5C of the receiving vehicle, the reference number of the private plate (from a retention certificate if it's currently on another vehicle), and pay any applicable transfer fee. The process usually takes 2–5 working days.
Can a private plate be removed before selling a car?
Yes — the seller can retain a personalised plate by applying to DVLA to put it on a retention certificate before selling the vehicle. The car will be returned to its original age-identifier plate. This is legal and common. The buyer should be aware that the price paid for the car should not include any value attributed to a private plate that the seller has removed.
Can a private plate increase a car's value?
A private plate itself may have value as a separately tradeable asset. If a private plate is included in the sale (and the seller has not retained it), its value should be separately assessed — particularly if it is a sought-after initials, word, or number combination. DVLA's own auction prices and specialist dealer values provide market reference. However, a plate does not increase the underlying car's value.
