How UK Road Tax Works

Road tax (Vehicle Excise Duty, or VED) is calculated differently depending on when your car was first registered. For cars registered after April 2017, you'll pay a first-year rate based on CO₂ emissions, then a standard annual rate from year two.

Registration date determines your rate

  • Before March 2001: based on engine size
  • March 2001 – March 2017: based on CO₂ band (up to 13 bands)
  • After April 2017: first-year CO₂ rate, then standard rate from year 2
  • EVs from April 2025: now subject to VED (previously exempt)

Important

From April 2025, cars with a list price over £40,000 pay an additional 'premium vehicle' supplement of £620/year for years 2–6 on top of the standard rate.

Cars Registered After April 2017

Post-2017 cars pay the standard rate from year two (£190/year in 2025). To save on year one, pick a car with very low CO₂. After year one the rate is the same for almost all petrol and diesel cars.

Best post-2017 low-emission options

  • Toyota Yaris Hybrid (1.5) — 82g/km CO₂, £10 first year
  • Honda Jazz Hybrid — 92g/km CO₂, £25 first year

Frequently Asked Questions

Which cars have free road tax in the UK?

Pure electric vehicles (EVs) registered from April 2025 are now subject to road tax. Zero-rated vehicles from before April 2017 with 0g/km CO₂ emissions (mostly EVs and some hybrids) still qualify for free VED. Check GOV.UK for the latest rates.

What is the cheapest road tax band in the UK?

For cars registered after April 2017, the first year rate varies by CO₂ emissions. After the first year, most petrol/diesel cars pay the standard rate (£190 from April 2025). Cars with CO₂ of 1–50g/km pay the lowest rates.

How is road tax calculated in the UK?

Road tax (Vehicle Excise Duty/VED) is calculated based on CO₂ emissions for cars registered after March 2001. Cars registered after April 2017 also pay a standard rate from year 2 onwards, plus a premium supplement for cars over £40,000.

Do I still need to pay road tax for an EV from 2025?

Yes. From April 2025, new and existing EVs are subject to VED at the lowest rate in their first year, then the standard rate from year 2 onwards. However, rates remain lower than equivalent petrol cars for most models.

What is a good CO₂ figure for cheap road tax?

For cars registered after April 2017, CO₂ emissions below 100g/km will result in a lower first-year rate. All cars pay a standard annual rate from year 2, making first-year savings the main benefit of a low-emission vehicle.
