Vehicle Registration Explained
The short answer

How UK number plates encode age and area

UK number plates follow a standardised format that encodes the registration area and age. Current format (since September 2001): two area letters + two age digits + three random letters (e.g., AB23 CDE). Digits 03–52 indicate March–August year; 53–02 indicate September year. Prefix plates (1983–2001) use the first letter for year. Private plates deliberately obscure age — always check with DVLA or HPI for original registration.

Questions & answers

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I tell a car's age from its number plate?
For UK plates issued from September 2001 onwards: characters 3 and 4 of the 7-character format encode the year. Plates issued March–August carry the year's last two digits (e.g., 23 = March 2023). Plates issued September–February carry the year's digits plus 50 (e.g., 73 = September 2023). Prefix plates (1983–2001) use the first letter (A=1983, B=1984... Y=2001). Suffix plates (1963–1983) use the last letter.
What do the first two letters on a modern UK plate mean?
The first two letters of the current format (post-September 2001) are the DVLA local memory tag, which indicates the area where the vehicle was first registered. Examples: AB, AC, AD = Anglia region; BA, BB = Birmingham; CA, CB, CC = Cardiff; LA, LB, LC, LD = London (DVLA Wimbledon). The letters I, Q, and Z are not used as area identifiers.
What is the current UK number plate format?
The current format (introduced September 2001) follows: two letters (area code) + two numbers (age identifier) + three letters (random). Example: AB23 CDE. The format allows for 168 million unique registrations. It will need to be updated around 2051 when combinations run out. Q-prefix plates are issued to vehicles where the age cannot be confirmed (e.g., kit cars, rebuilt vehicles).
What do Q plates mean on a car?
Q plates (Q + 5 characters) are issued by DVLA to vehicles where the age or identity cannot be confirmed. Common scenarios: kit-built vehicles, imported vehicles where documentation is incomplete, vehicles rebuilt from multiple identities, or historic vehicles without clear age evidence. Q plates significantly affect insurance (typically higher) and resale value, and should prompt extra scrutiny of the VIN and V5C.
Can I register a vehicle with a foreign plate in the UK?
No — foreign-registered vehicles being brought permanently to the UK must be registered with DVLA and given a UK registration. Drivers have 6 months from import to complete UK registration. The vehicle will need to pass an MOT and pay VED. DVLA issues a new UK registration mark which replaces the foreign plate. The VIN remains the same.
What does a Northern Ireland registration look like?
Northern Ireland registrations use the format: three letters + four numbers (e.g., ABC 1234). The first two letters indicate registration series; the third varies. NI-registered vehicles have DVSA MOT records accessible via the same history service as Great Britain vehicles. Their MOT history and DVLA records are held in the same national databases.
