Quick answer

The Four-Layer Process

A complete vehicle data check has four layers: (1) Free DVLA data — MOT status, tax status, vehicle spec; (2) Free DVSA MOT history — mileage timeline, test results, advisories; (3) Paid HPI/history check — outstanding finance, write-off history, keeper count; (4) Physical inspection — VIN verification, condition check. Run checks in this order before viewing the vehicle.

What each reveals

What Each Check Reveals

MOT history mileage drop → almost certain clocking — walk away
MOT history gap of 2+ years → possible export period or non-use — investigate
VIN mismatch between plate and V5C → potential cloned car — report to police
Outstanding finance → car legally belongs to finance company — do not buy until cleared
Category S or N write-off → car has been damaged and repaired — price negotiation and inspection required
Category A or B → car should have been destroyed — serious fraud if still on road

Questions & answers

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a vehicle data check?
A vehicle data check is the process of verifying all available recorded information about a vehicle before buying or using it. This includes DVLA registration data, DVSA MOT history, ownership records, and optionally paid checks for finance, write-off history and stolen vehicle status. The goal is to ensure the vehicle is what the seller claims, legally compliant, and free from hidden problems.
What is the most important free check to run?
MOT history via DVSA is the single most valuable free check available. It provides an independent, tamper-resistant record of every test since 2005, including mileage at each test, pass/fail status, and advisory items. Mileage inconsistencies and repeated failures are visible immediately. Use MotR's free MOT History Checker for instant access.
Do I need a paid check to buy a car safely?
For any significant used car purchase, a paid HPI or equivalent check is strongly recommended. Free checks reveal a lot, but outstanding finance and insurance write-off history are only available through paid data sources. A car with outstanding finance is legally owned by the finance company — you could lose it even after purchase.
How long does a full data check take?
The free checks (MOT history, tax status, basic DVLA data) take less than 5 minutes with the registration number. A paid HPI check takes a further 5 minutes and costs around £20–£30 depending on provider. A physical inspection takes 30–60 minutes. A full independent pre-purchase inspection by a mechanic takes 1–2 hours.
What if a check reveals a problem?
Use any negative finding as either a deal-breaker or a negotiating point, depending on severity. Outstanding finance is typically a deal-breaker — you should not complete the purchase until it is cleared. A write-off history with evidence of quality repair may be negotiable on price. An MOT mileage discrepancy is almost always a deal-breaker.
Is MotR an official DVLA or DVSA service?
No. MotR is not affiliated with, operated by, or endorsed by DVLA, DVSA, or GOV.UK. MotR uses official DVLA and DVSA data to provide free vehicle checks to UK drivers. For authoritative official checks, you can also use the DVLA and DVSA vehicle enquiry services directly on GOV.UK.
