How to Check a VIN Number

Verifying that a car's VIN matches its V5C is one of the most important checks when buying used. A mismatch — even a single character — is a serious fraud indicator. Here is exactly how to do it.

How to Check a VIN Number
The short answer

Match every character — or walk away

To check a VIN number: find it on the dashboard plate (visible through windscreen), driver's door sill, and under the bonnet. Compare every character against the VIN/Chassis No. on the V5C logbook front page. All 17 characters must match exactly. Any discrepancy is a red flag. For additional checks, a paid HPI report will cross-reference the vehicle's identity against finance, stolen, and write-off databases.

Step by step

Step-by-Step VIN Verification Process

01

Locate VIN on dashboard

Stand outside the car at the driver's side. Look through the windscreen at the bottom of the glass — the VIN plate should be visible on a metal plate or sticker on the dashboard.

02

Locate VIN on door sill

Open the driver's door. Look at the horizontal metal sill. The VIN may be stamped directly or on a riveted plate.

03

Check under the bonnet

With the bonnet open, inspect the firewall area and inner wings for a VIN sticker or stamped plate. On some cars it's on the engine cover.

04

Record each location's number

Write down or photograph each VIN. Every location should show identical 17 characters. Note any location where the plate seems newer than the rest of the vehicle.

05

Compare against V5C

Open the V5C to the front page. Find 'VIN / Chassis No.' and compare character by character with your notes. Identical on all counts = proceed. Any mismatch = stop.

06

Cross-check model year

Decode character 10 of the VIN (the model year code). This should align with the year stated on the V5C and the seller's claims.

Tampering

VIN Tampering: What to Look For

Re-riveted VIN plate — original rivet holes visible alongside fresh ones
Characters in inconsistent typeface or with different spacing from manufacturer standard
Dashboard sticker with bubbling, lifting edges, or layering under a 'replacement'
Grinding marks or fresh paint over any VIN location on metal
Door sill VIN covered with underseal — a specific tactic to hide modifications
Any disagreement between dashboard, door sill, and bonnet VIN locations

Questions & answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I check a VIN number for free in the UK?
Partially. The DVSA MOT history check and DVLA vehicle enquiry are free and use the registration plate. They do not directly show the VIN online. To verify the VIN, you need physical access to the car and the V5C logbook. There is no free official online service that lets you input a VIN and receive the associated vehicle record — although some commercial providers offer paid VIN decode tools.
How do I verify a VIN matches the V5C?
Find the VIN on the car (dashboard plate visible through windscreen, driver's door sill, under the bonnet). Note every character carefully. Then compare character-by-character against the VIN/Chassis No. listed on the front of the V5C logbook. All 17 characters must match exactly. Any discrepancy — even a single character — should halt the purchase.
What does it mean if a car has no VIN plate?
A missing or destroyed VIN plate is a serious red flag. In the UK, DVLA will not register or re-license a vehicle without a traceable VIN. If a plate has been removed, it may indicate the vehicle is stolen, has been involved in a major accident, or has been brought into the UK from a country with different VIN standards. Contact the DVLA if you encounter a vehicle without a visible VIN.
Can a VIN tell me if a car has been in an accident?
Not directly from the VIN itself. However, accident history may be visible in MOT records (structural corrosion failures, suspension failures) and will appear in a paid HPI or Experian check if the vehicle was written off by an insurer. A Cat S (structural write-off) or Cat N (non-structural write-off) marker will appear in a full vehicle history check.
Is a VIN check the same as an HPI check?
No. A VIN check verifies that the physical vehicle's identifier matches the documentation. An HPI check is a commercial service that searches databases for outstanding finance, write-off history, stolen status, and keeper records. The HPI check uses the registration number as input and returns records associated with that vehicle's history.
What year is my car from the VIN?
Character 10 of the VIN indicates the model year using a code system. The sequence is: A=1980, B=1981, C=1982... skipping I, O, and Q. After Y=2000, the sequence restarts: 1=2001, 2=2002... 9=2009, A=2010... The sequence then repeats every 30 years, so A could indicate 1980 or 2010 — context (other VIN characters, physical condition) resolves the ambiguity.
