UK Vehicle Compliance Essentials

MOT

Annual test from year 3 onwards. Maximum fee £54.85. Driving without a valid MOT risks a £1,000 fine.

Road tax (VED)

Must be taxed or declared SORN if off the road. Untaxed vehicles face an £80 automatic penalty.

Insurance

Continuous insurance enforcement (CIE) means your car must be insured even if parked — unless SORN.

Keeper responsibility

The registered keeper is legally responsible for tax, MOT, and insurance — even if someone else drives the car.
