What should I do if the check shows my car is uninsured?

Stop driving the vehicle immediately. Contact your insurer to find out why — common reasons include a failed direct debit, a policy not yet loaded to MID, or the wrong registration number on the policy. Do not drive until you have confirmed cover with a valid policy number and certificate of insurance.

Does comprehensive insurance automatically cover me to drive other cars?

Not necessarily. Drive Other Cars (DOC) cover used to be standard on comprehensive policies, but many modern insurers have removed it or restricted it to emergency use only. Check your specific policy schedule. Even where DOC is included, it usually provides third-party only cover — not comprehensive — on other vehicles.

Is it illegal to drive uninsured even for one mile?

Yes. There is no minimum distance or grace period. What is Continuous Insurance Enforcement (CIE)?

CIE is a UK law (the Continuous Insurance Enforcement Regulations 2011) that requires every registered vehicle to be insured at all times — even when parked on a public road — unless it has a valid SORN declaration. The DVLA cross-references its vehicle register against MID automatically. If your vehicle is uninsured and not SORNed, you'll receive a £100 fixed penalty by post, even if you never drive it. Does my car need insurance if it has a SORN?
